The vinyl record by Doris Day for Columbia Records reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the top of the UK Singles Chart. From 1968 to 1973, the song became the theme song for the sitcom comedy The Doris Day Show, and became her famous song.
The three main parts of the song go through the narrator’s life: from childhood, through adulthood and love, to becoming a parent and constantly asking “who am I going to become?” or “what’s ahead?” The repetitive refrain is the answer: “what comes, will come”. The song received an Oscar for best soundtrack in 1956. In 2004 the song was voted # 48 on the list of AFI’s 100 Years … 100 Songs including the top best songs of American films.
